How to Solve a Word Search
Word searches look simple, but some players solve them in half the time of others. The difference is method. Here are the strategies we use when testing our puzzles – and a free 10×10 grid above to practise on.
None of these tricks are secret; they just stop you staring at the grid hoping a word will appear.
Six strategies
- Scan for rare letters. Words with Q, Z, X, J or K are easiest to locate.
- Search one word at a time. Hold it in your mind and sweep the grid.
- Use double letters. Pairs such as LL, EE or OO stand out.
- Sweep systematically: rows, then columns, then diagonals.
- Look for word endings: -ING, -ED and -S often stand out.
- Mark as you go so you never re-check a found word.
When you're stuck
If one word won't appear, look for its second and third letters together instead of the first. If that fails, check backwards – in Hard mode words can run in every direction. As a last resort, use a hint; it costs 15 seconds.
